Log cabins have a long history and are at least as popular today as they were many years ago in North America. Wikipedia tells us that a “log cabin” generally refers to a small, rustic log house, such as a hunting cabin in the woods.
The log cabin is often associated with American colonial life and has been a symbol of humble origins in United States politics since the early 19th century. Presidents who claim to have been born in log cabins include Lincoln, Jackson, and Buchanan. Other candidates used the log cabin to signify that they were men of the people, hailing from financially humble backgrounds. Typically perceived as strong, reliable, wholesome, and environmentally friendly, log cabins are often used in various companies’ branding and marketing material.
Today’s log cabin is more accurately termed “log homes” and may be built from milled or handcrafted logs. Log homes convey a cozy, natural feeling but are not limited to rural areas, wooded regions, or vacation sites and are equally at home in upscale residential areas.
Naturally, wood logs are renowned for their innate energy efficiency. Timber is nature’s insulator with thousands of tiny air pockets trapped in every square inch of the wood. The heat transfer through the log is slowed naturally, making log homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
1930’s Adirondack-style lodges have greatly influenced the tastes of today’s customers. The rustic, natural elegance of this look has never fallen from favor. At Natural Element Homes, we have seen a growing trend toward the ambiance and character of a log or timber home incorporated into more traditional, stick built homes. We love the exciting opportunities that modern building techniques are affording today’s clients. Their desire for a beautiful, energy efficient home that is in complete harmony with the splendor of their property has never before seen so many options.
